Read more here   THE WORLD THIS WEEK • Supreme Court rejects Novartis AG's plea to preserve patent for cancer drug Glivec The Supreme Court of India has rejected Novartis AG's plea to preserve patent for cancer drug Glivec, ending fears among patients of a 15-fold price increase of the drug. Glivec is a miracle cure for a fatal blood cancer chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and is sold by Indian companies like Natco and Cipla for only Rs. 8000 per month which is much less than Novartis' price of Rs.1.2 lakh per month. The Supreme Court rejected Novartis's plea citing section 3(d) of the new patent law which says that a new form of a substance can only be granted patent if it enhances 'it's known efficacy". The court said that the beta crystalline form of the drug always existed and was nothing new to be granted a patent. • Shuffling in BJP, Modi appointed to Parliamentary Board The BJP has appointed Narendra Modi to its Parliamentary Board as well as to its main election committee, which will take key decisions in the run up to the 2014 elections. Amit Shah and Varun Gandhi have been made General Secretaries whereas Smriti Irani, Uma Bharati and SS Ahluwalia have been appointed Vice-Presidents. Senior leaders Yashwant Sinha and Jaswant Singh have been dropped from the committee. • Major depositors in Cyprus banks face losses, extensive controls imposed on movement of capital Cyprus's central bank has confirmed that major depositors will lose 60 percent of savings over 100,000 Euros. Capital controls were also imposed on the Euro for the first time. It is seen as an unwelcome move since it might contribute to a partial breakup of the Eurozone with an Euro held in Cyprus no longer worth the same as an Euro held in some other country in the Eurozone. • Reliance Industries signs Rs. 1,200 crore deal with Reliance Communications The telecommunication unit of Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Industries has signed a 1200 crore deal to use Anil Ambani's Reliance Communications fibre optic network to roll out its 4G services. This is the first ever deal in a comprehensive framework of intended business cooperation since the two brothers split their father's business enterprise 8 years ago. • New anti-rape law comes into force President Pranab Mukherjee has given his assent to the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill 2013 brought in the aftermath of the Delhi gang rape case which provides for life term and even death sentence for rape convicts besides stringent punishment for offences like acid attacks, stalking and voyeurism, which have been defined as non-bailable offences for the first time.
