Pakistan allowed US drone strikes in secret deal by insisting drones should avoid mountains camps where Kashmiri militants were trained
An article from the book "The Way of the Knife: The C.I.A., a Secret Army, and a War at the Ends of the Earth", reveals a secret deal in which the C.I.A. agreed to kill Nek Muhammad, a tribal militant who was considered an enemy of the state by Pakistan, in exchange for Pakistani airspace so that it could use drones to hunt down its own enemies. ISI negotiated that US drones could not venture in Pakistan's nuclear facilities or in mountain camps where Pakistani militants were trained for attacks on India.
Supreme Court cuts down austerity measures in Portugal, government warns of severe economic woes
Portugal faces fresh crisis as the government said it would be forced to introduce more spending cuts and everyday life would become difficult after Portugal's constitutional court struck down four of nine contested austerity measures that the government had introduced last year as part of a 2013 budget that included about 5 billion of tax increases and spending cuts. Portugal had received 78 billion as aid from IMF and European creditors but has failed to fulfill its economic goals and plunged further into deep recession.
Notices to Vodafone, Essar, HSBC for Rs.35000 cr under-reporting; Adani, Tata, Essar, JSW face Rs.2500 cr import duty evasion charges
Four Essar group firms, Vodafone India Services, HSBC Securities & Capital Markets and Bharti Telecom have been issued notices for under-reporting revenues of Rs 35,000 cr because of lower transfer pricing of shares than the rate specified by the government.
In another case, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has accused Adani Power, Tata Power, Essar Power and JSW Energy and other companies of evading Rs.25,000 cr of import duty by allegedly importing bituminous coal as steam coal.
Deep seabed mining of polymetallic nodules to become a reality
U.K. firm Lockheed Martin, for the first time in the world, will mine polymetallic nodules in a 58,000 sq. km. area in the Pacific Ocean. India, which is a pioneer in this research has been allocated 150,000 sq. km in the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB) for pursuing mining of nodules. The mining of polymetallic nodules, which are rich sources of Manganese, Cobalt, Nickel, Copper, is of extreme importance to India which does not have a terrestrial source of these metals.
