Andrei Tarkovsky (1932-1986) & Sergei Eisenstein were the greatest Russian filmmakers of the 20th century. This documentary examines Tarkovsky's cinema, with many examples of his extraordinary visual brilliance. For Tarkovsky, the essence of cinema is the capturing of reality which is timeless. The artist must bring his own unique reality to his work. Artifice - theatrical acting or literary intentions - must be avoided. Poetry, metaphysics and nature intertwine in Tarkovsky's world that is magical, supernatural, and ultimately beyond human comprehension. The audience is encouraged to be an active participant and work to discover the meaning for themselves. Long sequences help them reach a level of consciousness where they see time and the world differently.
