Snow leopard numbers have fallen by over 20 percent in less than 20 years. With as few as 4,000 left in the wild, and only around 500 in India, this magnificent big cat could soon vanish forever. Habitat loss, poaching and increasing conflict with communities are some of the threats to the survival of snow leopards. With a decline in their prey base due to habitat loss, snow leopards are being forced to rely on domestic livestock for food. Communities often kill these snow leopards in retaliation. A common way to do so is to place snares in the habitat. These snares result in various injuries to the snow leopard, in some cases it loses its leg which means it cannot hunt. With the help of WWF, students of Mongolia initiated an anti - snare campaign, removing snares from their habitat - swapping them for useful household items.
