Know more THE WORLD THIS WEEK MBA: • Russia, Ukraine and the West reach deal on Ukraine crisis; Russia accuses Ukraine of violating deal Russia, Ukraine, the US and EU reached a surprise deal in Geneva to de-escalate the tension in Ukraine including a call to disband armed groups that have taken over buildings in eastern Ukraine. However, within a few days, Russian blamed Ukraine for violating the Geneva agreement by refusing to disarm nationalist groups that are assailing pro-Russia Ukrainians. Ukraine, on the other hand, alleged that the shooters were not from Ukraine but sent by Russia to provoke war and terrorize people who do not want to join Russia • Independent director can sit on 7 listed companies: SEBI In a move to strengthen the corporate governance norms, market regulator SEBI has allowed an individual to be an independent director on the board of not more than seven listed companies simultaneously. The market regulator also mandated that an independent director can have a maximum of two consecutive terms of five years each with the same company. • Supreme Court rejects BCCI's proposed panel to probe IPL scandal The Supreme Court has rejected the three-member panel proposed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), to investigate the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2013 spot-fixing and betting scandal. Dhowan appointed new Navy chief The Union Government has appointed Admiral RK Dhowan as India's new navy chief. The navy has been without a chief since the resignation of Admiral Devendra Joshi, owning moral responsibility for a series of lethal accidents on board. • Arvind Mayaram named new finance secretary The appointments panel of the cabinet of India has named Economic Affairs Secretary Arvind Mayaram as the new finance secretary, replacing Sumit Bose, who had retired last month. Mayaram is a 1978 batch IAS officer from the Rajasthan cadre. • 61st National Film Awards announced Best feature film award, at the 61st National Film Awards, was given to Ship of Theseus directed by Anand Gandhi. Bhaag Milkha Bhaag won the Best Popular Film providing wholesome entertainment award. Raj Kumar was adjudged as the Best Actor for his performance in Shahid.
