CAT Question of the Day
Answer the question based on the information given in the passage.

The idea of the electric car has captured the imaginations of innovators as the apotheosis of an environmentally responsible future. They are often sold as “zero emissions” vehicles. However, the manufacturing process that produces electric cars – especially their batteries – requires an enormous amount of energy, most of it generated with fossil fuels. A life-cycle analysis shows that almost half of an electric car’s entire CO2 emissions result from its production, more than double the emissions resulting from the production of a gasoline-powered car. Moreover, the electricity required to charge an electric car is overwhelmingly produced with fossil fuels. Yes, it then emits about half the CO2 of a conventional car for every kilometer. Proponents proudly proclaim that if an electric car is driven about 300,000 kilometers, it will have emitted less than half the CO2 of a gasoline-powered car.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the claim of the proponents of the electric car?

OPTIONS

 1)
An electric car has to be recharged innumerable times using electricity produced using fossil fuels to run 300,000 kilometers.
 2)
The battery of the electric car has to be replaced several times if it has to run 300,000 kilometers.
 3)
A gasoline-powered car is refueled less number of times than an electric car is recharged to run 300,000 kilometers.
 4)
Developed countries provide lavish subsidies for electric cars so that they are comparable in pricing with gasoline-powered cars.
Tip of the Day
Do not get confused when Critical Reasoning questions have dummy or incorrect facts. This is done because these questions test the understanding of how these facts are related and not how correct they are. Adopt a more mathematical way of tackling these questions.
Last year's Question of the day (14-Mar-13)
