Following his appointment, senior BJP leader L K Advani, quit from all party posts which hinted at his disapproval of Modi as BJP's campaign chief. However, the RSS intervened and coaxed Advani into taking back his resignation. • USA's secret surveillance programme revealed, global phone and internet records of millions compromised An US national security contractor, has leaked secret documents about a secret surveillance programme known as Prism, through which the FBI used to gather call records of millions around the world and tap directly into the central servers of nine leading US Internet companies, including Apple, Facebook, Microsoft Corp and Google Inc. to extract massive amounts of data. The Congress has denied any foul play and defended the programme as being authorized by the court. However, the hearings of the foreign intelligence surveillance court are closed to the public, and, while records of the proceedings are kept, those records are also not available to the public. Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Yahoo have said that they only comply with orders for requests about specific accounts or identifiers. • RIL to invest Rs 1.5 lakh crore over three years Reliance Industries has announced to invest of Rs 1.5 lakh crore in core business of petrochemicals and oil and gas as well as in retail and telecom sectors in the next 3 years. • Rupee hits all-time low of 58.98 The rupee fell to an all-time low of 58.98 per dollar intra-day on Tuesday, 11th June, at the foreign exchange market due to concerns of growing trade and Current Account Deficit. However, dollar selling by public sector banks and exporters prevented the rupee from dipping below the 59 per dollar mark. • Foreign Retailers not allowed franchisee route in multi-brand retailing Foreign retailers, venturing into multi-brand retailing in India, will not be allowed to franchise their stores, and will have to put 50 per cent of their expenditure in back-end infrastructure specifically for the chain they are setting up.
