Tip of the Day Most DI Questions require you to interpret data which is in tabulated or visual representation form. Here, approximation of values is more important than exact figures. Last year's Question of the day (06-Mar-12) Many plants have flowers and these are the sexual organs of those plants. Flowers are usually hermaphroditic, producing both male and female gametes. The female parts, in the center of a flower, are the carpels—one or more of these may be merged to form a single pistil. Within carpels are ovules which develop into seeds after fertilization, which help the plant reproduce. The male parts of the flower are the stamens: these long filamentous organs are arranged between the pistil and the petals and produce pollen at their tips. When a pollen grain lands upon the top of a carpel, the tissues of the plant react to transport the grain down into the carpel to merge with an ovule, eventually forming seeds.
Which of the following is the purpose of a pollen grain in plants?
| OPTIONS | | | | 1) | Flowers are hermaphrodites that store ovules which turn into seeds. | | 2) | Stamens use pollens to create new seeds. | | 3) | Pollen grain acts like an external fertilizer to the ovule and helps the plant reproduce. | | 4) | Pollen grains distribute the seed of a plant far and wide. | | 5) | Pollens are single pistils made out of carpels. |
