Although fares have not been increased, reserved passengers will have to spend more to avail certain services. The amount of money for a host of new infrastructural projects, safety and passenger and staff welfare has also been increased significantly to Rs 13,220 crore for 2013-14, an increase of 16% from the amount spent in 2012-13. There will also be a 5% average increase in freight charges. • 14 killed and several injured in Hyderabad blasts Two powerful bombs fastened to parked bicycles exploded in Hyderabad's busy Dilsukhnagar area on Thursday, 21st February, killing 14 people and injuring 119 others. The blasts are suspected to be the handiwork of banned outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM). • Air Asia to launch low-fare flight plan for tier-II and tier-II I Indian cities Malaysia based budget airlines Air Asia will launch low-fare flight plan for tier-II and tier-III Indian cities. Air Asia CEO Tony Fernandez said that price would be the key differentiator with other Indian carriers and it would avoid certain airports which are most costly. • Kingfisher loses international flying rights and domestic slots The Ministry of Civil Aviation has decided to withdraw with immediate effect the international bilateral traffic rights and the domestic slots of Kingfisher Airlines because of non-utilization. The rights as well as the slots, which are in much demand, will be made available to domestic carriers. • No party wins clear majority in Italian parliamentary Elections The recently concluded parliamentary elections in Italy might result in a hung parliament as none of the parties have succeeded in obtaining a majority in the Upper House of Parliament known as the Senate. The center-left coalition headed by Pier Luigi Bersani has won the lower house vote by half a percentage point more than the center-right coalition headed by Silvio Berlusconi. The absence of a clear majority in the Parliament might hamper Italy's growth efforts. • Reserve Bank of India to allow private players to enter the banking sector The Reserve Bank of India, on Friday 22nd Feb, released new rules that would allow private players and non-banking finance firms to enter the tightly regulated banking sector. The RBI, however, mentioned that foreign shareholding should not exceed 49 per cent in the first five years. • 85th Academy Awards announced, Daniel Day Lewis wins best actor for third time The 85th Academy Awards, more commonly referred to as the Oscars, were held in Hollywood, California on the 4th of February to honor the best films of 2012. Ang Lee's 'Life of Pi' won 4 awards, the most for the evening. Daniel Day-Lewis won the Best Actor award for a record third time, portraying the titular character in the film 'Lincoln'. Jennifer Lawrence won the Best Actress award for her role in Silver Linings Playbook.
