If the ban is implemented, Indian athletes will be ineligible to participate in international sporting events. As of 5th December 2012, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has suspended the Indian Olympic Association because of interference by the government. • UN recognizes Palestine as a non-member observer state The United Nations General Assembly has finally voted in favour of recognizing Palestine as a non-member observer state. Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, had earlier stated this recognition as the last resort to maintain peace and harmony with Israel. This recognition means that, Palestine can now participate in UN debates, join the affiliated bodies and have a voice in world affairs. • Maldivian government rejects Singapore court order; terminates GMR's role in operations of Male International Airport Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture of the Maldives, Mr. Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor said that Maldives has decided to end GMR Infrastructure's twenty-five year contract to own and operate the Male International Airport. Mr. Gafoor said that the decision was "a totally economic one" and that it was "crucial to its survival." A Singapore court had given a stay in the injunction order and allowed GMR to stay in Maldives, however, the Maldivian government rejected the court's stay on the termination. • Indian railways need Rs 1,47k crore to finish projects Indian rail minister, Pawan Bansal, said on Friday, 30th November 2012, that the Railways has not been able to manage its funds and hence has not completed its projects which have been pending since a long time. Mr. Pawan Bansal also disclosed that the backbone of India, her Railways, requires a mammoth Rs 147,187 crore to complete close to three hundred and forty projects. These projects only cover railway work including laying of new tracks, gauge conversion and doubling of tracks. • Multiplex Cinemax sold to PVR for Rs. 395 crore This is said to be one of the biggest deals in the Indian movie industry. PVR, under the leadership of Ajay Bijli, has bought out screen multiplex giant Cinemax. Cinemax is said to have 138 screens across the country and PVR is said to have purchased it for a whopping Rs. 395 crore. This humungous cost makes the merger one of the largest in the market. With this acquisition, PVR will dominate movie screens with a hold of close to 350 screens at 85 locations and a market share of 27%. • US economic growth rate revised up to 2.7% For the third quarter of the year, the U.S. economy grew at an annualized rate of 2.7%. This comes from the latest revised data. The initial figure suggested by the Commerce Department of the U.S. was 2%. This estimate was made before the presidential elections. One of the main reasons for the increase in the growth rate is credited to the rebuilding of companies' inventories. The initial estimate of 2% was also high, according to some analysts. • IndusInd Bank raises funds through Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) IndusInd Bank has reasons to smile. It has managed to raise a huge amount of Rs. 2000 crore through sale of its shares to banks including UBS, Government of Singapore, SBI Mutual Fund and HDFC Life. The shares have been sold at Rs. 384 per share.
