Supreme Court creates 'third gender' status for transgenders
In a landmark judgment on 15th April, the Supreme Court (SC) of India created the "third gender" status for hijras or transgenders. The SC declared that henceforth the 'third gender' people will be considered as OBCs (Other Backward Classes) and given educational and employment reservation.
India tops the list in earnings through remittances says World Bank Report
As per the latest report released by the World Bank, India has topped the list of countries receiving remittances from overseas workers. India leads the table in terms of remittances flow receiving $70 billion in 2013 with China ($60 billion) and the Philippines ($25 billion) at second and third position respectively.
UK queen confers Knight Commander rank on Ratan Tata
The Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday conferred the rank of Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE) on former chairman of the Tata group Ratan Tata. The KBE is one of the highest honours given by the queen to civilians. Ratan Tata was given the honour for his services to UK/India relations, huge business contributions in the UK and philanthrop.
Libyan Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thani quits
Libya's interim prime minister handed his resignation, less than one month into the job, saying gunmen had tried to attack his family. Abdullah al-Thani's resignation adds to the growing chaos in Libya, where the government has struggled to control brigades of former rebels nearly three years after the fall of Moamar Gaddafi.

Gulzar, Bollywood's famous lyricist, wins Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2013
Bollywood's favourite lyricist Gulzar has been conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's highest award in Cinema. Gulzar got his first break in Bimal Roy's 'Bandini' (1963) with the song 'Mora Gora Ang Layle'. Gulzar has created several evergreen songs in his illustrious career and also wrote script, story, and dialogue. He has also directed critically praised films.
India-born poet Vijay Seshadri wins 2014 Pulitzer, newspapers Washington Post and Guardian also win for NSA revelations
India-born poet Vijay Seshadri has won the prestigious 2014 Pulitzer in the poetry category for his collection of poems "3 Sections". Born in Bangalore in 1994, Vijay came to America at the age of 5 and grew up in Columbus Ohio.
The Washington Post and The Guardian won the Pulitzer in public service for revealing the U.S. government's secret surveillance programme based on documents leaked by by NSA contractor Edward Snowden.
Justice RM Lodha to be next Chief Justice of India
Justice Rajendra Mal Lodha will take over as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) replacing present Chief Justice P Sathasivam who retires later this month. Justice Lodha heads the bench which is monitoring CBI's probe into the coal blocks allocation scam and was also instrumental in making the CBI independent from government sanction.
Jaipur girl Koyal Rana wins Miss India 2014 title
Koyal Rana was crowned the new Miss India 2014 in a star studded event at the Yash Raj Studio in Mumbai on Saturday (12th March) night. She was selected amongst 24 other gorgeous finalists and will now contest for the Miss World title.
