An UN team, out to inspect the attack had been shot at by snipers. If confirmed, it would be the worst chemical weapons attack in 25 years. The US has blamed Syrian President Bashar al Assad for the attack and has warned of possible military action against Syria. The US and its allies said that they were ready to launch strikes while Syria's allies, Russia, Iran and China have warned the US of dangerous consequences in the event of a strike. • Lok Sabha passes Food Security Bill The Lok Sabha passed the Food Security Bill on Monday, 26th August. The cost of the scheme will be approximately Rs.1.3 lakh crore and is expected to cover 82 crore people. Under the scheme, a person would be getting 5 kg per month of rice, wheat or coarse grain at extremely subsidized rates. • Rupee hits historic low of 68.82 against dollar, Gold reaches record high of Rs. 34, 500 The rupee hit a record low of Rs. 68.82 per dollar on 28th August, among concerns on the expected subsidy burden following the passage of the Food Security Bill and a possible US strike on Syria. Gold reached a record high of Rs. 34,500 per ten gram with a biggest ever single day surge of Rs. 2,500 in opening trade in bullion market on 28th August. • Photojournalist gang raped in Mumbai, 5 arrested Three among a group of five men raped a 22-year-old photojournalist, after bashing up her male colleague at the abandoned Shakti Mills in the Mahalaxmi area of Mumbai on the evening of 22nd August. The incident has received widespread attention and the police have nabbed all five accused in the case.
