But the bridge is such that people with equal weights are seated on both sides of the carrier and then someone has to turn the lever on the south bank of the river and then the carrier rotates about the centre of the river in a horizontal plane to take people from the north side to the south side and vice-versa. Four men want to cross the river, two from each side. But they cannot do so since there is no arrangement of the men on the bridge that will permit them all to cross since there always has to be someone on the south bank to operate the lever. Fortunately, an old man was walking on the north side of the river at that time. With his help they were able to cross the river in just two separate lever operations (two 180 degree rotations) and the old man goes to his home on the north side. It is given that the weights of the men were 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 units and the first operator of the lever was lighter than the second operator and the sum of the weights of the two operators was equal to the weight of the old man.
